Total Depravity Part Two

bible-24In Jeremiah 17: 9 it says “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” When a person’s heart is desperately wicked and deceitful above all things it is inclined to do evil (because that is its nature) and mankind cannot seek God. The persons whole being is corrupted with sin. I really want you to grasp this, as it is so important to your understanding the condition of mankind.

Loraine Boettner in his book The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination wrote: “This doctrine of Total Inability, which declares that men are dead in sin, does not mean that all men are equally bad, nor that any man is as bad as he could be, nor that anyone is entirely destitute of virtue, nor that human nature is evil in itself, nor that man’s spirit is inactive, and much less does it mean that the body is dead. What it does mean is that since the fall man rests under the curse of sin, that he is actuated (motivated – put into action –set in motion) by wrong principles, and that he is wholly unable to love God or to do anything meriting salvation. I hope you noticed Mr. Boettner’s comment that man is wholly unable to love God or to do anything meriting salvation.  This is so important to how you build your foundation about the things of God.

I think Satan thought that if he could get Adam to sin, he had secured his soul, and the souls of all mankind, because he knew that mankind would be spiritually dead to the things of God. But God had other plans already set in place before the foundation of the world – He knew man would fall into sin, He knew what Satan would do – See nothing surprises God because He ordains all things to come to pass – God had planned for the cross of Christ long before Adam sinned. See His plan is to bring glory to the Son, and He has, and He will.

Man is totally ruined, he is unable to release himself from the power which holds him as a slave – he cannot rescue himself, nor can he do anything to save or liberate himself from this terrible power of sin. So total depravity means that the entire human race is dead toward the things of God, and in reality it means he cannot respond to God in anyway or manner. So we could say that humans are walking dead men. We see then, that the sinner is alive in the body to wickedness but dead to the things of God. Verse to look up: Genesis 6:5 – Genesis 8:21 – Romans 1:18, 21-24, 28-32 – Romans 3:10-18 – Mark 7:14-21 – Psalms 36:1-4 Jeremiah 17:9-10 – Ephesians 4:17-24. Now that we have seen what the fall of Adam has done to the whole human race lets look forward to the HOPE that comes in Christ.

In this series Searching for Truth  we will look at many verses that people have taken out of context and used them to mean something other than the true gospel of Christ.

Seeking Truth – Think and Ponder

Total Depravity Part One

bible-251I have so much on my mind and heart that I want to share with you today, in doing so I have decided to start a new series on “Searching for Truth.” It is really cold outside and the sky is that cold grayish color. I needed to leave the room for a minute and while I was in the other room I found myself praying that God would direct me and guide me in His truth – when I came back into the room I notice the sun light through my window shinning so brightly on my desk – I hope what is shared through this series does that in your life – I hope the SON – the real LIGHT will shine upon you and that the truth of His word will warm your hearts and souls.Maybe the best place to start is with what is called Total Depravity, by that I mean that because of Adam’s sin – his sin nature passed to every living human being in the world, which means we were all conceived in sin. Yes even that little baby in the womb had or has a sin nature. Psalm 51:5 – 58:3
Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shaped in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

The dictionary says that iniquity is wickedness or evil, this is the nature Adam passed on to all mankind. What an inheritance! So when people say that babies are without sin that is not a true biblical doctrine, even babies are created with that sin nature, and that is the nature which separates us from God. Don’t think I am saying that all babies go to hell because I am not saying that at all. We will tackle this later.

When Adam sinned it placed the whole human race at odds with a Holy and Righteous God. It broke our fellowship with Him. And we became spiritually dead. There was nothing in us good any longer. Total Depravity means Spiritually Dead; take a look at Genesis 2:16-17 “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest therefore thou shalt surely die.”

God made Adam and Eve leave the beautiful Garden of Eden. And yet they lived many years after they fell into sin; as well as having children and grandchildren. Instead of living forever their bodies died. Not only that – but they died spiritually. They were spiritually dead to the things of God. That is what Total Depravity means. We know that all men are not as evil as they could be – the reason for that is because God restrains evil in this world.

To be continued in part two of Total Depravity but in the meantime Think and Ponder.

May this series be a blessing as we search for truths.
In Him and loving it!
