A Hard- Proud, Hollow Religion – Horatius Bonar

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

horatius-bonar-2aaaIntimacy with God is the very essence of religion.

The understanding of doctrine is one thing, and intimacy with God is another.  They ought always to go together; but they are often seen asunder; and, when there is the former without the latter, there is a hard, proud, hollow religion.

Beware of mere opinions and speculations. They become idols. They nourish pride of intellect. They furnish no food to the soul. They make you sapless and heartless.

Intimacy with God is the very essence of religion.

Be True – Horatius Bonar

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

horatius-bonar-2aaa1

Thou must be true thyself, if thou the truth wouldst teach; thy soul must overflow, if thou another’s soul would’st reach! It needs the overflow of heart to live the lips full speech.

Think truly, and thy thoughts shall the world’s famine feed; speak truly, and each word of thine shall be a fruitful seed; live truly, and thy life shall be a great and noble creed. - Horatius Bonar

Begin the day with God! – Horatius Bonar

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

horatius-bonar-14By Horatius Bonar

Begin the day with God!
He is thy Sun and Day!
His is the radiance of thy dawn;
To Him address thy lay.

Sing a new song at morn!
Join the glad woods and hills;
Join the fresh winds and seas and plains,
Join the bright flowers and rills.

Sing thy first song to God!
Not to thy fellow men;
Not to the creatures of His hand,
But to the glorious One.

Take thy first walk with God!
Let Him go forth with thee;
By stream, or sea, or mountain path,
Seek still His company.

Thy first transaction be
With God Himself above;
So shall thy business prosper well,
And all the day be love.

HERE, O MY LORD, I SEE THEE – Horatius Bonar

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

horatius-bonar-2aaaSong by Horatius Bonar

Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face;
Here would I touch and handle things unseen;
Here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace,
And all my weariness upon Thee lean.

This is the hour of banquet and of song;
This is the heavenly table spread for me;
Here let me feast, and feasting, still prolong
The hallowed hour of fellowship with Thee.

Here would I feed upon the bread of God,
Here drink with Thee the royal wine of Heaven;
Here would I lay aside each earthly load,
Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.

I have no help but Thine; nor do I need
Another arm save Thine to lean upon;
It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed;
My strength is in Thy might, Thy might alone.

I have no wisdom save in Him Who is
My Wisdom and my Teacher both in One;
No wisdom can I lack while Thou art wise;
No teaching do I crave save Thine alone.

Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness:
Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood;
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace;
Thy Blood, Thy righteousness, O Lord my God!

Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear;
The feast, though not the love, is past and gone.

The bread and wine remove; but Thou art here,
Nearer than ever, still my Shield and Sun.

Feast after feast thus comes and passes by;
Yet, passing, points to the glad feast above,
Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,
The Lamb’s great bridal feast of bliss and love.

A Few More Years Shall Roll – Horatius Bonar

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

horatius-bonar-12By: Horatius Bonar

A few more years shall roll,
A few more seasons come;
And we shall be with those that rest,
Asleep within the tomb.

A few more storms shall beat
On this wild rocky shore;
And we shall be where tempests cease,
And surges swell no more.

A few more struggles here,

A few more partings o’er,
A few more toils, a few more tears,
And we shall weep no more.

Then, O my Lord, prepare
My soul for that blest day;
Oh, wash me in Thy precious blood,

And take my sins away.
