Effectual Calling

bible-18Westminster Confession of Faith pg 53: All those whom God hath predestinated unto life, and those only, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time effectually to call, by His Word and Spirit, out of the state of sin and death, in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ, enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand that  things, of God; taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them a heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ: yet so, as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.

This effectual call is of God’s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man, who is altogether passive therein, until being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.

Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated, and saved by Christ through the Spirit, who worketh when, and where, and how He pleaseth: so also are all other elect person who are uncapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word.

Others, not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word, and may have some common operations of the Spirit, yet they never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be save: much less can men, not professing the Christian religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion they do profess. And, to assert and maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detested.

Remember the lady in my book study who made this statement? “I couldn’t see why it was so important anyway this doctrine of Predestination or Freewill, until I discovered that the Scriptures stand or fall on this one doctrine.” Now do you remember Pastor Norm Wakefield replied to the question: “The strongest ground to stand on is simply the Scriptures.  If God put it in there, it’s there for a purpose. Look up the word predestine and notice the verses in which it is used.  They are significant verses regarding salvation. It simply means to “put a boundary around” or to “mark off” ahead of time.  So the concept is that God put His children within the boundaries of His salvific love before the beginning of time. Then as they were born into history, He acted toward them according to His vision of saving them through His love revealed in Jesus Christ.”

So God put His children within the boundaries of His salvific (Tending to save or secure safety) love and that He was the one doing all the action bringing them to salvation. As we think about predestination with the lady’s statement above, and since we have been working through each of the devotions which have come our way – we have come to the conclusion that the Scriptures plainly teach that it is His work in all things – even the believers effectual call, it is all tied up in His predestination of those who are to be called, sins atoned for, and redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

So Dear Ones, if we are in Christ it is because God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit worked together to accomplish our salvation, and to Him and Him alone belongs all glory! For we do not call ourselves to Him, we did not atone for our sins, we do not justify ourselves, it is all the precious work of the Trinity of God.

By whose grace is it that you are saved?  For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of yourself, it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 Notice not just your salvation was ordained but so are your works, in other words your daily walk, and life are all laid down before the foundation of the world, and you ask why, – simple to bring glory to the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ!!

Drop the doctrines of men, and seek the Word of the living God, for in them and only in them, will you find rest for your weary soul.
